Tick season is here

Posted Wednesday, 16 November, 2011

Ticks are found in most areas of Australia. While most of them are harmless to ourselves and pets, there is one that is deadly. The paralysis tick (a bluish white in colour) is aptly named. The paralysis tick latches on and as it feeds, it injects poison into the animal causing paralysis to set in. Symptoms include wobbly back legs, loss of voice and droopy lip on one side just to name a few of the more alarming signals. If the tick is not immediatelly removed and Vet assitance sought your pet will die. It is critical to ensure if you live in a tick prone area your pet should always have tick protection applied. Advantix or Frontline, a fortnightly applicator is excellent as it applies directly to the back of the neck and is absorbed by the bloodstream. This way your pet can be bathed or swim 24 hours later. However, daily tick checks should also occur as protection is not 100% safe.
